What the Developers say

The alien monster invaders have left Bricksburg in ruins. It is now up to Emmet and a host of heroic characters to go beyond their world and save their friends from the strange inhabitants of the Systar System. Players can journey into outer space, discover new worlds, and test their Master Building skills.

Introduction

It has been over ten years since the release of ‘Lego Star Wars: The Videogame’, the first Lego video game that I had ever played and arguably revitalised the LEGO video game brand. Fast forward to 2019 and ‘The Lego Movie 2: The Videogame is the latest entry in the hugely popular LEGO franchise. Released to coincide with the movie of the same name, The Lego Movie 2: The Videogame comes from the developers at Traveller’s Tales, responsible for the vast majority of the LEGO video games including Lego DC Super Villains, Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 and Lego Lord of the Rings.

Audio & Visual

The Lego Movie 2: The Videogame has a soundtrack which you are either going to love or hate. The game opens with the film’s soundtrack song ‘Everything is Awesome’, and truth be told, things can only go up from there. The sound effects and level soundtrack are all pretty decent but nothing to write home about.

Visually, the game is very pretty, and I liked all the bright and wonderful colours both in level design and character design. If you played a Lego game before then you’d know what to expect visually so while nothing has changed style-wise over the years, I guess there’s no need to change what is working well for you. What I did notice however throughout my play were bad frame rate issues. As I would traverse through the various worlds, the frame rate would constantly dip which is quite disappointing considering that what I was doing in the game wasn’t anything very intensive.

Gameplay & Replayability

If you’ve played a Lego game before then, you’ll know exactly what to expect from The Lego Movie 2: The Videogame. Break things to get parts – check. Build things – check. Collect zillions of currency randomly scattered around each level – check. It’s a tried and tested formula and one that works well. You can build tons of different things as you progress through the game from bouncers to help you reach high places to building vehicles.

The last Lego game I played was well over ten years ago, and I found it to be very, VERY repetitive. You break things, and you build things. Repeat. And while that is the same in this game, The Lego Movie 2: The Videogame has a decent storyline to it along with some cool bosses and exciting challenges. The gameplay is still simplistic, and I do feel that this game is squarely aimed at young children, so it is a little unfair for me to say it’s too simple when I am not the targeted audience for this title.

Conclusion

The Lego Movie 2: The videogame is, not surprisingly, going to be an excellent game for those that loved the movie and for those who are fans of the Lego games in general. There is great value for the price, and it’s all quite whacky and whimsical – this is a game aimed for the younger audience. So while it’s not my cup of tea, I can see the appeal of this title. If you see it for a decent price and looking for a gift for your child or relative – picking this up will likely keep them happy and entertain them for a good while.
