Gardening For Tech Enthusiasts
As a tech enthusiast first, gardener second, I like nothing more than to explore the ways in which technology is enhancing and evolving gardening. More importantly the experience of gardening across the small sliver of summer the UK is allowed to enjoy each year.
When it comes to trimming the hedges at home, it’s a task I historically dread. We have a giant dividing hedge that lines our rear driveway, and with shared ownership between us and our neighbour it often gets a little out of hand turning our double driveway into a tighter squeeze than we’d prefer.
I’ve also worked my way through 2 other cordless hedge trimmers the past 3 years of cutting. The hedge is made up of Blackthorn, and has an awful lot of very thick brambles that squeeze themselves through the gaps. Unfortunately for many hedge trimmers they really weren’t up to the task and didn’t have the cutting power or longevity to carve through those thicker branches. The net result being, a broken blade to one hedge trimmer, and another with the battery life of approx 9.5 mins to try and get the job done.
In The Box
Enter the latest release from STIGA and a piece of gardening tech I was eager to get my hands on. Handle end first of course. The HT 300e Hedge Trimmer provides a unique solution to dealing with some of the tough trimming tasks, with its dual mounted 20volt ePower batteries. Cleverly mounted to each side of the handle, they provide twice the typical power of a cordless hedge trimmer and twice the battery life.
In my testing I found the HT 300e a beast of a trimmer that glided through the hedge like a hot knife through butter. It was noticeably powerful and precise, and with the power packs mounted as they were it was incredibly balanced with the weight well distributed across the soft grip.
The Setup
There were a couple of extra features which were incredibly useful, including a 180 degree rotation, which meant I was able to flatten off the top of the hedge without needing a ladder. Super convenient but most importantly the balanced feel made the whole experience feel safer and more controlled. Now a rotating handle is not a unique feature only belonging to this hedge trimmer. What is unique is the five adjustable positions that click on the rotation. This gives you lots of control around the orientation and the finish with every cut.
So one of the bigger challenges when it comes to garden machinery and tools, is where do you keep them, how are they stored and how do you keep them accessible for use? Often my tools end up in the shed or the loft, they take up so much space, and frankly look untidy. This really wasn’t a problem for the HT 300e, as it includes a mounting kit in the box. Designed to wall mount the charging bracket, and allow the power supply to thread directly down to the wall socket. A bit like a Dyson handheld but with bigger teeth.
The Experience
In summary the STIGA HT 300e is an exceptional piece of kit. Super powerful at working its way through the most brambly of hedges and bushes, cutting branches as long as 23cm. A 5 Year Warranty included as a standard, and a battery life that I just couldn’t exhaust in one days typical usage. At £199 RRP the price does put it towards the more professional end of the cordless hedge trimmer market, but with its current discount and the features included I would happily recommend this to anyone that wants to make one of the more frustrating garden tasks an absolute breeze each and every time.
