Gaming to Save the Planet
When this package turned up from Stealth on my doorstep, I thought “Man that’s a big box”. As someone who is very conscious about recycling, I was over the moon when I opened it up to find that there would be NO plastic packaging within the products I was reviewing. This was an absolute delight and something that more companies need to embrace. After all, so many of us game and buy accessories made from plastic, the least we can do is reduce the amount that we receive!
Anyone who’s read my reviews before will know by now I have a structure. Let’s switch it up for this one! I’m going to work through each item that Stealth sent me and then give an overall view.
Cables Galore!
First up on our list is the Stealth SP-C10V Play & Charge Cables (RRP: £7.99). Stealth kindly sent me a twin pack of these high-speed USB-C cables and I was delighted. Now you might think “Michael, they’re just cables!” and that’s where I’d tell you that YOU’RE WRONG! These generously lengthy 3 Metre cables allow for you to sit about as far away from any charging point you want to, and still have room (unless you live in a mansion). They’re not just long, but they’re also strong. The cables are braided for strength and durability and are done with blue detailing for a lovely aesthetic. Now these are marketed as “for PS5” but there is really no reason you couldn’t use these with anything that takes USB-C. My partner has already tried to steal these on multiple occasions for her phone and her headset…
We Stan a Stand
I might be one of the most disorganised people in existence, but when it comes to my gaming gear and my tech, things need to look good and be stored well. When I received the SP-C60V Gaming Station Charging Dock and Headset Stand (RRP: £24.99), I was grinning from ear to ear. With easy self-assembly, the stand takes seconds to put together and looks pretty good. Now, I am a sucker for quality too and I’ve been known to splash a little too much cash for things. I must say that I don’t love the plastic that the dock and the base are made from. It feels brittle and cheap. The Flexi-plastic material for the headset stand however feels really nice and strong.
Unfortunately I have another gripe with the dock. When you go to place your controller on the dock, lining it up isn’t smooth. It required a bit of force to get the controller connected to the charging point. I’d like to see this revised so it’s smooth and uses gravity to make the connection. Due to this issue, when removing your controller, it often takes the charging dock with it as the connection is firm to the charging port. Meaning I can’t just walk over and pick up my controller with one hand. This is a pretty major UX flaw in my opinion.
Simply Sounds
The final item on our list is the XP-Panther Sky Premium Gaming Headset (RRP: £24.99). Now I have a lot to say on this, so buckle up.
Firstly, the design of the headset is lovely. I really like the colour and the feel of it. They don’t feel flimsy or particularly cheap but obviously aren’t going to be the best quality in the world. So don’t throw them around too much. They have an adjustable headband and the earcups have free movement to suit most heads and still be comfortable. The headset is definitely comfy and I could wear there for a few hours at a time without strain. The only drawback of the design is the microphone arm. Personally, I would like one that is a bit longer and has a smooth finish to it. The headset has a 3.5mm audio jack, a built-in push-to-mute button and adjustable volume controls, though I did find that they were generally a bit on the quiet side.
Now, Sound. As a bit of an audiophile and having worked in the music and tech industries, I have pretty strong opinions.
Let’s start with the microphone – It’s bad. Not walkie-talkie bad, but more like a 2007 earphones I used with my Sony Ericson Walkman bad. It’s pretty muffled and not very clear. This might be in part due to the mic arm positioning, but the mic quality definitely has a part to play in that. Credit where credit is due though – the microphone is better than some other headsets at this price-point. However, it’s nowhere near good enough to be called a “premium” headset.
And now for the actual audio. This leaves a lot to be desired. The headset boasts “Quality Audio Speakers” but definitely fails to deliver on that. The audio lacks depth and clarity, focusing more on the general noise rather than any actual definition. I tested these on my PC for the best reflection of their quality (since they are marketed as “Multi-format”). In my opinion, a headset that requires me to adjust my device’s EQ settings just to get something bearable is not a “Premium” product.
Am I saying you shouldn’t buy these if you’re on a budget, absolutely not – they’re a perfectly fine headset for their value, great for kids who don’t really care too much, or people who need something in a pinch, but if you had a choice, these wouldn’t be what I’d pick.
Stealthy Scores on the Doors
On the whole, these products are ok. The cables are easily the best thing that turned up for me and definitely well worth buying for any purpose. The Docking station is not bad, though could do with a design adjustment (then it would be awesome). The headphones would be suitable for children with an unrefined audio pallet. I think with a few minor adjustments to the design and the components used, these products could be seriously epic. I’m going to break down the review ratings for each product as below:
