Swiss-Army Speaker

When considering your next portable speaker, it can feel like one of those decisions that requires significant research and thought, and often results in a need for more than one item to tick all of those boxes.

For example, you may need an Outdoor speaker which is hardwearing. Something capable of taking a small drop, or even a few scrapes along the way as you enjoy your summer garden playlists (and try not to upset the neighbours along the way).

You may also need something that’s paddling pool compatible and can take a splash of water here and there. Maybe even fully equipped for the escapades of a summer holiday at the poolside.

Soundcore have gone all-in with the Boom 2, and I have to say, it definitely ticks all of the above boxes and then some. The speaker is assembled from polycarbonate with a premium soft coating on the surface. It’s incredibly solid feeling, with little flex in the frame or shell of the speaker. It feels ergonomic to carry and is compact enough that I’ve committed to making some space in the suitcase for next week’s adventure to Spain.

The Sound

The Soundcore Boom 2 has a heavy duty design feeling that’s built with intention and boosts an IPX7 rating. This means the Boom 2 can be submerged in water up to one metre for 30 minutes without any damage. A perfect choice for holidays or kitchen splash zones alike. In fact, it’s even advertised as floatable. If you need a swimming aid to keep you afloat in the pool whilst jamming out to Evanescence, this could certainly be it.

The sound quality of the Boom 2 is above average, and leans towards a V-shaped signature. You hear a strong emphasis on bass and treble frequencies, with the mids being recessed. This feels typical for this type of product and it really means it sounds punchy and energetic. It’s far from a reference speaker, but certainly a lot of fun.

For those bass hunters out there, there is a bass-boosting function that pushes 60W to 80W on the output. Of course this will have a definite impact on the touted 24 hours of battery life. Needless to say it gets very loud, and with those twin tweeter pulsing on the sides you can hear and feel the bass emphasis here.

Enlightening

If you are wondering at this stage what else you didn’t expect to need from an outdoor speaker, let me add two more super fun features from the Boom 2. First up, it works as a power bank. An excellent feature if you are caught short on battery life for your smart phone. You can connect a USB cable into the rear USB port and it will push out a 5W charging output. This could be an emergency life saver and I think it’s a super cool addition.

The second feature is the Beat-Synced LED Light Show included for each side of the speaker drivers themselves. You can customise the colour settings, or do the right thing and switch it out to the rainbow light show. It will then synchronise the light show to the music you have playing. This is epically fun stuff, and honestly it would serve as an incredible centrepiece for your next party. Turn the living room big lights down and it absolutely will fill the room quicker than a wedding DJ playing Livin’ on a Prayer.

In Summary

The Boom 2 really does pack a whole lot of technology into this speaker. With all of the features mentioned above it also has an attractive and striking design. There is even future thinking technology’s including Bluetooth 5.3. There is very little to complain about, evidenced when I demonstrated the speaker to my wife. I asked her where she would price this device given what’s on offer. She estimated between £300-350. When I told her you can pick up the Boom 2 for an RRP of £119.99 her jaw dropped.

The Soundcore Boom 2 is an incredible value, with superb sound quality it is a Swiss army knife of clever features packed into an excellent outdoor speaker.
