One Mic To Change It All

When I got an email from Shure about a new product, I was beyond excited. When they told me what it was and I’d get an early look, I went CRAZY. In my younger years, I was a sound engineer and semi-professional musician, so have been working with Shure’s products for years. Now I spend all day Infront of my desk on meetings, streaming, gaming and writing. Once again, Shure have come to save the day for me.

Introducing the Shure MV6 – The latest contender to the podcast/gaming/streaming microphone scene. As we all know, Shure have been responsible for some of the most popular desktop microphones of ALL TIME (including the MV7), and this will be no different.

Now That’s What I Call Bang for Buck!

The MV6 is Shure’s answer to a more affordable microphone that’s suitable for everyone. With a very reasonable price point of £129, it appeals to people from all walks of life. When we compare this to the likes of the MV7+ at £269, you get much better value for money. The Microphone strips off a few of the features that most people don’t need, but keeps all the incredible sound quality and sleek design.

The compact form factor of the MV6

All the Bells and Whistles Built In

The Shure MV6 focuses more on the general user than anyone, but is perfect for the top end of the industry too. Unlike the MV7+, the MV6 has simply a USB-C connector for it’s power and output. It does also include a 3.5mm headphone jack for live monitoring/ device output too, meaning you can hear all your games and videos through it too, as well as the immediate output from the microphone. The Microphone also includes a nice touch button for muting the microphone – great when you’ve got to sneeze!

When we take a look at the features of the microphone, it has a couple of techy bits built in. It has an Auto Level Mode – This state-of-the-art feature enables the MV6 to intelligently adjust the microphone’s gain in real time based on your distance from the microphone and volume level. This creates more consistent sound all the time and helps prevent peaking or missing the quiet moments.

On top of this, it has a new feature that Shure are calling the “Digital Popper Stopper“. This was inspired by the MV7+ and effectively eliminates the harsh plosive sounds (the P, T and S sounds that often stand out) that you’d normally need a pop filter to remove. Very clever and makes a massive difference!

The other big bit is the MV6’s real-time Denoiser. This uses DSP technology to remove unwanted background sounds such as fans, AC units and other humming/whirring noises. This leaves you with a wonderfully clean sound, even on a hot summer’s day.

All of these features are built in and already enables out of the box. If you’d like to mess around with these features however (along with anything else), be sure to download the MOTIV MIX application. This allows you to edit the microphones features and sounds, as well as control multiple devices/inputs at ones with a digital mixer – great for all the podcasters out there! The MV6 also boasts an OBS certification and functions seamlessly with PC and Mac, as well as selected Apple and Android mobile devices.

How does it compare?

I’ve been using all kinds of mics over the years, many of which I still own. Until this came along however, I’d switched back to my old Blue Yeti Microphone from my SteelSeries headset mic. It has always been a good and reliable mic, but not without it’s flaws. The MV6 absolutely blows the Blue Yeti out of the water. The sound is clearer and richer, the form factor is smaller, the USB connection is Type C (not that horrible Mini-USB that should have died with the PS3 controller). Every single person I’ve spoken to in the last couple of weeks has noticed a massive difference, and the quality of the audio on my streams and recordings has been much better. Hiding this device until today has been really tough, but I’m super excited to make this my go-to microphone moving forward and to recommend it to anyone and everyone!

What’s the Scores on the Doors?

The MV6 is unquestionably going to change the market and the microphone game in general. It’s compact, nice looking, incredible sounding and VERY well priced. This one is a no brainer of a purchase and gets the Subsonic stamp of approval!
