Predator Helios 300 – Initial thoughts

Reading Time: 3 minutes

A new experience

I’ve had the Acer Predator Helios 300 gaming laptop for a couple of days now so I thought I’d post some of my first impressions and experiences of using it.

Helios 300

I’ve never had a gaming laptop before, in fact, I’ve never really had a powerful PC before.  But then again, I’ve never needed one.  As a teacher, the ability to browse the web and created documents was all that I needed.

However, I’m also a gamer at heart and a gadget lover.  Therefore, when I was offered the chance to review a gaming laptop by Acer, I jumped at the opportunity.

Since starting my website, I’ve had to turn down many opportunities of Steam codes because my laptop/PC just wasn’t powerful enough to run the games on offer.  It’s so good to be able to accept Steam games and play them at relatively high settings.

Looks

The Acer Predator Helios 300 gaming laptop is a no-nonsense device.  It isn’t the prettiest thing in the world, but it isn’t the ugliest in the slightest.  I like the black and red colours, and I love the red backlit keyboard.

Gaming

I’m not going to even pretend to know all about the latest graphics cards, processors etc…  To me, I just want to know if the game I want to play will run.  So far, I’ve played Forza Horizon 4 and Sea of Thieves on the laptop, at near enough highest settings.  All games that I’ve played so far have looked gorgeous on the full HD screen.

The laptop does get quite hot and it does sound like a jet engine taking off at times.  However, with the cool boost turned on the loudness of the fans is an acceptable payoff for keeping the laptop cool enough.  It’s really easy to turn on overclocking, as you can see in the image below.

Everyday tasks

The laptop features an Intel core i7 8th Gen processor and 16 GB of DDR4 RAM.  Therefore, doing everyday tasks is literally a breeze.  I’ve been able to browse, listen to music, tweet, create reviews and more, all at the same time with no issues whatsoever.

I’ve got the laptop for two weeks, so I’ll be posting my full review after that.  In the meantime, I’m off to play some more games to review.

A big thank you to Karen at Agent42_UK and Acer UK for providing me with the power of the Acer Predator Helios 300 gaming laptop.  Without their support, I wouldn’t have been able to review the games that I’ve been provided with.
