Looks and Sounds As the lightning struck on the title screen of this latest indie platformer from DrinkBox Studios, I had a feeling my eyes were in for a treat. In an age where we have been treated to graphical masterclasses in the form of Breath of the Wild and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, it has never been more difficult to keep up appearances on a Nintendo system. Guacamelee has no problems in this department, and when coupled with the dulcet tones inspired by Mexican culture, it makes for a feast for the eyes and ears. Gameplay and Replayability Within five minutes of loading Guacamelee, I had been informed that I should brush my teeth by an overweight villager, I had punched a chicken, and attempted to rescue the president’s daughter from a burning building.  As a sign of things to come, it doesn’t get much better than that! Taking place during the Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival, this magical, fictional world provides the perfect backdrop for multi-dimensional platforming.  Taking inspiration from many of the great action games, sprinkling some excellent combat not too dissimilar to Super Smash Bros, and Guacamelee produces a game oozing with creativity. As you traverse the superbly well-designed landscapes, you defeat enemies and collect coins.  Said coins can then be spent in pop-up shops around the towns where you can purchase new abilities and make aesthetic changes to your character. My first purchase was a Pollo Luchador (a giant chicken) and my next was Flame Face (a man with a flame for a face…) It all made for a thoroughly enjoyable experience that had me gripped from start to finish. Conclusion Having originally been released on PS3 and PS Vita in 2013, it could be suggested that this game is out of date and out of touch. This could not be further from the truth and if you have not played it before, I implore you to give it a go! Rapid Reviews Rating You can purchase Guacamelee!
