Choices, Choices, Choices

The Flexispot E7 Standing Desk is made up of two customisable components; a frame and a desktop. The frame has an option of three monochromatic colours, with a wider mix of desktop variations available. There’s an impressively high range of wood textures to choose from, with the traditional oak and maple joined by rubberwood and black walnut (the option I selected). I received these two components in two separate boxes, with each of them having a surprising heft. Once I had successfully shimmied the packages into my home office, it was construction time!

Assembly Time

I’m no expert in the world of flatpack furniture, but this desk was surprisingly easy to put together. When it comes to assembly, I’d recommend working with another person, as both the metallic frame and wooden top can be heavy. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, with a helpful flexispot-branded screwdriver tool provided. The only issue we came across came by way of installing the cable management section. Fortunately, there was a helpful video tutorial on Flexispot’s youtube channel, which gave a step-by-step rundown on how to clasp the piece of metal to the underside of the desk. Final step? Plugging the power cord into the wall. After about an hour, the desk was ready to be turned on.

Consider The Size

As a standard desk, the Flexispot E7 was already impressive with a nice shine to the wood and an enormous amount of room to house my monitor, keyboard, and laptop. Thanks to the large worktop, I could even add my Mario Kart Live vehicle and Nintendo Switch dock; and there was still room to spare. Space is ample when it comes to this desk so make sure to check the measurements to see how it sizes up in your own room.

Moving On Up

Of course, there’s one noteworthy feature that makes the E7 desk different to a normal desk. Based on how far you’ve read this review so far, you will not be surprised to learn that this desk stands! The height is adjustable thanks to an LED screen which can be mounted to the left or right of the desktop depending on your preference. An up-and-down arrow moves the desk to different heights, and the preferred standing/seated positions can be easily programmed in. I particularly enjoyed being able to move to my two preferred heights with a single press, with the desk moving quickly with a mild motor sound when adjusting its position. I also appreciated the various modes of ‘collision detection’, which meant that when obstructions such as my leg were detected, the desk moved upwards in response.

Not many desks have their own LED panel!

To quote Todd Howard as an adjustable standing desk, “It just works”. But what are the benefits of standing? Well, I found that I was much more alert during meetings with a better ability to brainstorm. I’m naturally someone that moves around a lot when presenting, so I enjoyed bringing this energy to my work-from-home meetings. The desktop was stable enough to support the weight of my arms whilst I typed on the keyboard. As such, in the fortnight I’ve used this desk, I’ve been standing for the majority of my meetings.

Final Thoughts

At a ~£500 price point, the Flexispot E7 is a sizeable investment into your home office. Fortunately, with its sturdy build, easy set-up, and smooth height adjustment,  I’d definitely recommend the Flexispot E7 if you’re searching for a standing desk.
