The Test Of Time

Edifier are swiftly approaching their 30th year, originally starting their journey back in 1996 with a team of audiophiles in Beijing attempting to crack the consumer market. They are synonymous with building highly technical speakers and feature led audio products with very fair pricing.

Today we are reviewing their newly released flagship wireless earbuds the Edifier NeoBuds Plus. At £129.99 they sit comfortably below many of the competitor offerings with these features, and truly excel in several ways that go beyond their rivals.

The Style

Image of the NeoBuds Plus

The NeoBuds Plus are available in two colour choices, with Black which is well black, and starlight which is an off white champagne hued colour. The packaging is simple and elegant, with a magnetic flip box that opens up to the buds themselves.

Inside the box things feel premium including a set of Medium Silicon tips fitted to the buds. We also have an additional 6 sets ranging from XXS all the way up to XXL, so unless you are the BFG you’re absolutely going to find your perfect fit with these.

Also included is a USB A to C cable, and a handy travel pouch to slot the buds and charging case into, a nice touch I haven’t seen included before. The buds themselves are angular and industrial in design, with a boom pointing down towards the jawline and they sit close to the face. They have a soft textured plastic construction that feels very similar to the materials Sony use with their top end Ear Buds. I really like the feel of the NeoBuds Plus, they are solid and premium to hold and wear.

The Features

There’s a lot to be said about the features on offer with the NeoBuds Plus, and it’s a risk to say, but these are almost zero compromise on the cutting edge of the technology available with ANC Earbuds. Firstly with Bluetooth 5.4 included the NeoBuds Plus have incredible low latency performance as well as the benefits of multipoint connection. Experiencing this first hand the device switching was seamless between my laptop and the change over to my Legion Go windows handheld, literally 3/4 seconds and the media source changed without a hitch.

We also have active noise cancellation included and this was technically very impressive, with up to -48dB reduction this is almost market leading for EarBuds, and in my experience Very Good to Excellent in real life experience. My extremely technical real world test came from hoovering the stairs, with the TV on, and the neighbours dog barking at the postman. All noises outside of my ears disappearing into a distant memory.

There’s also a whole bunch of excellent quality of life features included, such as wear sensors in the ears that pause your music should you take one of the buds out and IP54 dust and water resistance that make them a great companion for the gym. Although bare in mind that the case itself does not include any resistance so ensure that’s safely kept dry inside your gym back.

The Sound

Ok so with the technology aside, these are bluetooth earbuds and arguably the most important part of the experience is how they sound. From a technical standpoint, the NeoBuds Plus include a hybrid driver unit which includes a very renowned Knowles Balanced Armature Driver and also a Dynamic Driver. This is complex stuff but essentially draws from the benefits of both technologies with the Balanced Armature excelling with high frequency sound reproduction and the dynamic driver helps things sound natural and lush. This blend gives a natural feeling standard EQ and the sound is well executed.

Out of the box the EQ follows almost perfectly to the Harman Curve, so naturally very pleasant, great treble and only missing out with a slightly thin bass. All in all, the sound is extremely enjoyable and with the comfort wearing the NeoBuds Plus for long stints I’ve spent many enjoyable hours listening to music and gaming with them. Talking about long stints, they include a total of 47 hours battery life, which means I used them for a whole week without needing to charge. Even when it came to needing to top them up, a 15 minute charge on a 20w power adapter provided another 4 hours of usage.

The Result

I’m really impressed by what Edifier has put together with the NeoBuds Plus. A no compromise supremely technical set of bluetooth EarBuds executed well for what is a reasonable price point of £129.99. My only small niggles are the lack of any included IP rating on the case and the dimensions of the case itself (not particularly pocketable, but made up for with the incredible battery life). These small things aside, they are fantastic and I can offer a whole hearted recommendation that these are the best ANC EarBuds in class at this price point.
