The end of civilization
DustOff Z is a shoot em’ up which does not present a deep narrative. Instead, the game is mostly a series of levels that will give the player better equipment and weapons. You’re asked to keep going until the end and beat the game with the highest rating in every level. Each of these is rated from 1 to 3 stars, depending on the time and accuracy with which the player completes them. The higher the rating, the better.
What awaits in the zombie apocalypse
From the start, there are around 30 levels and the standard difficulty is pretty challenging. On some levels, depending on our objective, it could get even more difficult. We’ll have the possibility of upgrading and unlocking different vehicles (always in the form of a chopper) and new weapons. These upgrades are necessary, considering the new enemies that we’ll meet. The upgrade of vehicles will be almost mandatory, especially in the last missions where survivors must be rescued. We’ll have limited space in our chopper. So, in order to have a perfect rating and be granted with the best reward, we should avoid wasting time and make the most of the space in our vehicle.
Battle for Survival
The levels and music are not so different from each other. DustOff Z was clearly made for casual gaming. It’s worth noting that there are practically no load times. Perhaps in the future, the game will be available for mobile platforms?
Knowing Your Enemy
The enemies vary in their sizes, weapons or the damage they cause. Throughout the game, we’ll need to collect zombies to complete a database and this is how we reach the final level. Enemies are separated into the ranks of “normal”, “lieutenant”, “boss” and various others.
I Understood That Reference
One of the best things about the game is the many pop culture characters with one example being Terminator as well as others that the player will have to unlock. All these characters are well known in the zombie and action genre, so the player will be pleased with the extra characters.
As for the graphics and sound design, Dustoff Z incorporates simple character and enemy design with not much personality. But for the game’s purpose, it’s enough. It’s the same for sound design and music. The songs are repeated very often, but that’s not necessarily something that takes you out of the game.
The Verdict
Overall, Dustoff Z is a simple game with a clear objective. It entertains the player in its 4 or 5 hours of gameplay but I think that it would work better on mobile devices.
