Ergonomic Delights

For this review we have a delightful new product from our friends at Nerdytec. In the form of the Couchmaster® CYCON³, an ergonomic lapdesk designed to enhance your gaming experience away from the desk.

Nerdytec themselves are a German based company founded by two passionate gaming friends back in 2011. Roman and Chris were dissatisfied with the lack of options available for console gaming on the sofa, and now 14 years along the road we have the 3rd generation product of their vision with the Couchmaster® CYCON³.

First and foremost the CYCON³ is a lapdesk, really solidly built, with a polycarbonate construction. It is very ergonomic by design, with a vegan leather wrist support sloped at the front. With an 82cm diameter there is plenty of space across the desk for whatever peripherals are suited to your currently gaming activities. Whether it’s a wired keyboard and mouse like adventure, or controller based there is plenty of space for a drink or even to charge your phone.

Premium by Nature

As a product proudly designed and manufactured in Germany, it feels like it. Very premium and robust, and the HORIZONLIGHT LED bar at the top is capacitive touch compatible. It can be configured to meet the mood of the moment. A nice touch is the included Gaming Mouse Mat, which is stuck down using some 3M strips to keep it firmly in place. I did notice that the included mouse mat does cover some of the COUCHMASTER logo, which is a shame. I’d have much preferred the vertical rather than horizontal mousemat included with previous iterations, but that’s a small nitpick.

Contained inside the lapboard itself is a nicely designed, and cleverly cable managed USB Hub. The idea behind the product is you can wire in as many as 6 lag-free USB peripherals at once. There is then just one 3 metre power cable that runs between the lapboard and a main socket, with a USB passthrough to connect to your source (such as your PS5 or PC).

By design this is excellent, and a great way to keep things tidy and manageable, without the snaky wires trailing across the living room floor. Where the CYCON³ really comes into its own is the two accompanying memory foam armrests. These aren’t connected to the lapboard itself and simply serve as ergonomic support for both the user, and the lapboard itself. At 60cm in length, this doubles the depth for users. In my hands on it makes sofa gaming an absolute game changing experience and so comfortable!

In Summary

The CYCON³ is such a clever product and it absolutely delivers on its promise. Premium construction and a very cool LED lightbar attract lots of attention, but it’s the technology and the quality of the included USB Hub and passthrough that really impresses me. The CYCON³ has several improvements vs the previous generation CYCON² and I can’t wait to see what innovations are included in the next iteration. For me, more USB C would be perfect. So many of my peripherals are fully moving across to the standard, it feels like a logical next step. For now though, I fully recommend this for the gaming couch potato in your life!
