Developed by Petite Games, Bouncy Bullets is a first-person platformer that challenges you to complete stages as quickly as you can. There is no story, no plot and no intro to this vibrant title – just a few gameplay hints and you’re on your way.

Bouncy Bullets is made up of 84 stages, each of which incorporates light platforming mechanics that require you to jump from platform to platform while wielding a gun. Your gun can shoot both purple and yellow cubes that defeat stationary enemies of the corresponding colour. Other enemy types require a different approach – black enemies, for example, must be defeated with a bouncing bullet, while grey characters are not to be hit at all.

Each of the stages is nice and short, with a completion time between 10-30 seconds. Speed is the name of the game, and each level is rated out of three stars depending on the time taken to complete them. Later stages offer you the choice of different paths in an attempt to finish as quickly as possible.

New mechanics are introduced as you progress through the 84 stages. Jump pads are used to propel you to a raised platform, while hazards such as lasers and spikes will cause instant death. Enemy types are also introduced in this manner and help to keep the difficulty on a steady incline, although the levels never became challenging enough to cause frustration.

The standout aspect of this game has to be the music. The upbeat, electro soundtrack that accompanies you through each stage perfectly complements the bright and vibrant world. Blocky platforms are set against a sea of pink, and bounding through a level while gazing at colossal ice cream cones is unique. Visually and audibly, Bouncy Bullets is nothing short of a psychedelic trip.

Depending on your platforming skills, your time with Bouncy Bullets will most likely last around an hour. The game is split into normal levels and a Special Mode, which increases the difficulty by spawning in more enemies. Completing just 31 of the 84 stages will award you with a platinum trophy, so anything after this is a self-motivated effort into speed achievements and star-chasing. The time-dependent three-star system does encourage players to adopt this approach, but it has no impact on the overall trophy system.

My time with Bouncy Bullets was short and sweet, and I do wish that there was more content on offer. The electro soundtrack is a highlight and, visually, Bouncy Bullets is a psychedelic adventure. Trophy/achievement hunters seeking an easy title to 100% will enjoy the thirty minutes they spend with Bouncy Bullets and what Petite Games have created is far from a cash-grabbing platinum.
