My first glimpse at Super Cane Magic Zero was their wonderfully absurd trailer, and after I had finished watching it, I still had no idea what to expect. What I did know was that I was in for a ride unlike anything I had played before and I couldn’t have imagined how right I was.

In the heart of it, SCMZ is an RPG with a simple plot. There’s a Wizard (Cake the Wizard) who can make cakes appear out of thin air, and one of the cakes causes him to die which in turn causes his pet dog (AAAH) to be upset, which causes him to develop magic powers that he uses to wreak havoc which causes major disturbances in the world of WOTF. An interesting fact is that Cane translates to Dog in Italian, thus the name of the game. SCMZ makes plenty of dad jokes, and while they are welcoming at the start, as you progress through the game, it could be felt as overused.

The game takes place in the world of WOTF, where you find yourself awake in the middle of a crater. You get to pick between a selection of 4 characters (Baker, Plumber, Influencer and Wizard). Each of them has their own pros and cons, which include differences in health and attack; it’s also notable that each character has their own special power. For example, the wizard can create an explosion that heals nearby allies while the influencer can create a blast which deals damage over time. Once you have chosen your character, you go through a tutorial in where you learn the basics of the game.

An interesting aspect of Super Cane Magic Zero is that you can eat anything and everything (No seriously, among the things I ate include rocks, lamps and even a Nokia). Each item that you pick up can be consumed, and the effects vary from item to item. Eating meat increases your health while eating bombs cause you to blow up (literally). In SCMZ, you start with minimal armour and equipment and getting new armour and equipment is based on random loot that can be found by breaking chests and defeating enemies. Even though Super Cane Magic Zero has a cartoon-based look, don’t be fooled by its innocent look. The enemies are fierce as you progress, even in normal mode they put up a challenge, you even get to fight fridges and doors.

You soon learn that you to save the world of WOTF, you must find other wizards (who are conveniently missing) through the help of their Canes (dogs). While accomplishing this, you can upgrade your skills and magic powers while also rebuilding the town, which will prove to be of great help to you. Super Cane Magic Zero also has another mode; Arena mode. While the main story mode can be completed with 1 to 4 players (the more, the merrier), the Arena mode is a blast on its own. In this mode, you can compete against your friends in local multiplayer, which is just chaos (in the best way possible). Everything that you can do to enemies in the game, you can replicate to each other here, you can pick them up and throw them around!

Super Cane Magic Zero features a museum where you retrieve collectables through random loot (both by defeating enemies and collecting chests). There is plenty of replayability in a sense you can choose to tackle a dungeon to find collectables from a certain level that you lack, or you can jump straight into a random dungeon with a friend. As loot is randomly generated, you never know what you are going to find which makes the game interesting, and the replay value of unpredictability is there. Also, the arena mode is great for short bursts by itself and makes a great addition as a mini-game.

The game features cartoonish graphics which is perfect for the type of game this is – an Italian artist/ YouTuber makes it. Visually the game looks great, and the soundtrack seems ideal for the game. But there are certain flaws to be pointed out. The loading times are quite bad between screens. It takes me 2 to 3 mins to load from the screen to the game. Sometimes, the game lags and glitches are encountered. In the tutorial level, I was unable to enter a specific place due to a glitch.

In conclusion Super Cane Magic Zero is a good game with a rather simplistic plot, it is most likely not the type of game that is going to be super memorable, but it will be fun when played in short bursts. But where I feel Super Cane Magic Zero stands out, is its multiplayer aspect. Both story mode and arena mode when played with people make the game 5x more enjoyable. In single-player mode, the game tends to feel a bit repetitive and boring, but in multiplayer mode, that is never felt. SCMZ is more than worth your time if you have someone to play with and if you’re the type of person who can’t stop making dad jokes, this is right up your alley!
