Superhero Shenanigans
Wow, is it 2024 already, phew! Towards the end of last year, I was sent a few Invincible goodies to review by Skybound Games. I was sent the dice game and a lanyard/badge set. I love Invincible and I am known to play a board game or two, I even wear a lanyard every day at work. Surely this is a match made in heaven?
Let’s start with the dice game then, many companies in recent memory have thrown out ‘dice game’ versions of bix box games and they have had a varied amount of success. I am sure, however, there is no Invincible big box. Invincible the Dice Game is a very small, quick and simple ‘filler’ game that anyone can play. Unfortunately, this may be its biggest flaw. As I will explain later, there are many other games in this genre and at this weight level that are far superior to this one. The Invincible theme does the heavy lifting here for sure and fans may be able to squeeze some enjoyment out of it.
The Setup and Turn Structure
To set up you grab the deck of cards, the dice and energy cubes and put them within reach of all players. Easy as peas. In this game, you are trying to gain the most points or reputation, as it is called in this game. You do this by going through as much of the deck as you can rolling dice and overpowering characters from the Invincible cartoon. If you cannot get through a card though you end up with nothing, that’s where the ‘push your luck’ mechanism comes into play. Do you push for those possible extra points or stick with what you have? It’s up to you.
At the start of your turn, you grab all the dice and the three energy cubes. You then turn over the top card of the challenge deck, this card will have a few items on it for your consideration. It’s reputation, or how many points it’s worth. It’s Challenge value, or how much damage you must do along with its loss of energy value, which is how many of the energy cubes you lose if you fail. Sometimes cards will have other effects and small tweaks but they are all explained on each card and you just have to face whatever event or nasty thing you reveal.
Choose your Dice Wisely
Next, you select from your pool of various dice, how many you want to commit to the encounter. Remember, you need to beat the Challenge value, otherwise you will lose energy equal to the loss of energy value on the card. In your dice pool, there are six yellow dice, three orange dice, two red dice, one black die and one special blue die. You always roll the blue and can then commit up to three other dice. From yellow being the weakest up to the single black dice which is very powerful.
Once you have selected your dice you roll them and hope, hope that all goes well and you don’t get slapped upside the head by whatever you are fighting. You add up all the pips and see if it equals or beats the challenge score of whatever is in front of you. You also look at the special blue die that does weird and wonderful things. It can make you lose energy, double your attack pips or even let you re-roll a die of your choice. It’s a little spicy. If you win, you put the card in front of you, which is your score pile and if you lose, you lose the required energy, leave the hit dice on it you used and go again.
Push your Luck and Component Quality
After you have defeated the card it’s up to you whether you want to bank the points or carry on. If you ever fail to beat a card, by running out of dice or lose all your energy, you get nothing from that round, not even the previously beaten cards. It’s ‘push your luck’ it’s dice chucking and it’s very simple. Once someone gets to 15 points or more, everyone else gets one last turn to try and beat them and that’s it. The most Invincible player will prevail!
Component-wise, Invincible the Dice Game is good. The dice are bright, chunky and well-made. The cards are of a decent stock and the artwork is recognizable by fans of the show. It’s a small game with not many components but what is there is of decent quality. The rulebook is small and easy to follow, which is also a plus.
I wanted MORE!
All in all, Invincible the Dice Game is serviceable. While I would not turn down a game if my lads asked, I have many other games in the same class/time/weight category that offer much more. If you like Invincible, you will like seeing and fighting characters from the cartoon but other than that the theme does not gel greatly with the show.
At the end of the day, you’re just turning over cards, rolling dice and hedging your bets. If you are a fan of the show and new to board games you may garner some enjoyment, otherwise hit me up. I can give you a massive list of games I would rather play in the same amount of time, with the same rules and complexity that offer more fun and rewarding gameplay. Keep on gaming folks.

And…….. A Beautiful Little Gift Set
Along with the dice game, I was also sent a pin and lanyard set which is lovely. The badges have an AR app with them that plays scenes from the show and I now wear the lanyard to work every day. The whole thing came in a lovely box and they are all made of very high-quality materials and look gorgeous. I love the show and representing it at work and when I am out and about is great. I often get people asking where I got it from and it’s a nice little package for any Invincible fan. If you need to buy something for someone who loves the show, I highly recommend it. Superb!
