A gamepad unit was provided for review purposes

I’ve never owned any form of controller other than the standard kind that comes with the console. There have been a few replacements over the years, but always a like-for-like. So when the opportunity came my way to review the customizable Mega Modz PS5 controller, I just couldn’t turn it down. For note, I received the Mega Modz PS5 FPS Professional Tournament Gamepad. I’ll mention that now to avoid straining your eyes with longer sentences as we go through the review.

A Well-Presented Surprise

The Mega Modz PS5 FPS Professional Tournament Gamepad was shipped to me from the States, and it surprised me with how swiftly it arrived. Although this surprise is more aimed at the UK postal service than anything else. I was given the choice of one of six different controller designs, which turned into decisions far more difficult than I expected. After long deliberation, I elected to go for the blood-splattered zombie design.

When it arrived, the Mega Modz PS5 FPS Professional Tournament Gamepad was well-presented in a box that was made to measure. Everything fit snuggly into place. Nothing was too cramped or edged in to make it inaccessible, yet it was perfectly held for transatlantic travel.

The controller comes with three different thumbstick options, each with their own additional rubber sheathing for extra control and gaming comfort. The different thumbsticks varied in height in what I shall term regular, long, and extra long. After a bit of trial and error, I realized the shortest sticks, which are the same length as the standard controller, were the best for me. Changing them is a piece of cake, and I never worried I would damage the controller.

Embracing the Digital Age

Mega Modz is a modern company and has embraced the digital age by offering a QR code that provides access to its user manual. I’m not the biggest fan of technology, and I would rather have a physical manual to refer to. In fact, I held off for as long as possible, eventually finding a YouTube video that helped me with the programmable back buttons.

The Same Controller but Different

The Mega Modz PS5 FPS Professional Tournament Gamepad is a modified Dual sense controller, the same as I have been using my PS5 gaming to date. However, there are some subtle differences, that make this controller stand out from the crowd. I won’t lie; it took me a while to get used to them. Had I been forced to write a review based on first impressions or a quick gaming session, I would have said something different. In fact, I still have it here in my notes.

However, I  have spent a lot of time gaming in order to put this game through its paces. It has coped with the stress and rage of Lies of P and the relatively sedate Truck Driver: The American Dream (review pending). It’s dealt with sports games, horror games, and even a quick bash at Fortnite, a game I never really enjoy but play occasionally, even if just to keep up a conversation with my older kids.

Finding My Balance

The first thing I initially struggled with when using the Mega Modz PS5 FPS Professional Tournament Gamepad was finding the right balance in my grip. Adding the mappable buttons on the central rear section of the controller meant I needed to adjust my regular grip. Doing so made it feel as though the controller was weighted differently. After a couple of good play sessions, however, I realized that there was no vast difference. The new grip, with triggers beneath my forefingers, now feels comfortable and natural. I was also surprised that when I swapped back to the standard Dual Sense – when gaming with the kids – I instantly adjusted my grip without thinking.

The Clicking and Clacking of Buttons and Triggers

My main gripe with the Mega Modz PS5 FPS Professional Tournament Gamepad is the rear shoulder triggers. The standard Dual Sense controller has adaptive triggers and the haptic feedback that feel so good when using them. The Mega Modz, however, has none of this. The rear shoulder buttons click rather than press.

NOTE: The change to the trigger presses is an intention one. As I mentioned at the start, this is the professional gaming variant of the Mega Modz controller. The reduced trigger distance (around 1mm) isintentionaly to make the controller more receptive to quick reactions and closer to a mouse click.

While I enjoy the crispness of sound this produces, I still miss the sensation of pulling a trigger. This is the only aspect of the controller that I personally didn’t get on with. Then again, I’m a casual gamer, and it was a purple sensory issue. I can’t argue that the short press distance certain helped me with my Lies of P block/parry timing.

Easy to Customize Buttons

Once I managed to find the instructions – my fault, not the controllers – programming the back buttons was a breeze. Simply hold a button, wait for the lights, tap the relevant ones, mapping the from and to aspect, and Bob’s your uncle. There is a lot of scope for the configurations, as there are four extra buttons on the back to play with. Being quite boring, I reprogrammed the shoulder buttons, as these not only felt the most logical but were also the most useful, especially for my Lies of P adventure.

I was worried I would find the change of buttons odd, but two things surprised me. One, remapping the buttons just gave me extra options. I could use the shoulder buttons or the news I had set. Perfect. Also, having the triggers in the middle of the controller felt comfortable, and I quickly adjusted to their use.

A Very Good Controller

I am very thankful to have been given the opportunity to use the Mega Modz PS5 FPS Professional Tournament Gamepad. The price point is one that I could never justify, not for personal use. The controller is beautiful. The colors are vibrant, and the imagery is sharp. The controller feels good to hold, and once I quickly adjusted to its weight and balance, it felt like an old and trusted friend.

I still miss the range of motion on the triggers. However, I do love the crisp sound each button press makes. It’s a simple thing, but I’m the same with my keyboards. They need to make the right sounds for me to enjoy typing with them.

Is the Mega Modz PS5 FPS Professional Tournament Gamepad a good controller? Without hesitation, yes. I love it, and while it took short period of adjustment, I love it. However, the price point is something that will be a point for a lot of people. Certainly for casual gamers or those with families and the need for multiple units. Then, there is some comfort in knowing that the ‘standard’ Dual Sense remains a quality device. The differences are minimal for casual gaming types.

That said, now I have the Mega Modz, I am unlikely to swap back … unless the kids make me.
