Better the Devil you know
Diablo III finally makes its inevitable debut on a Nintendo system after months of rumours and whispers in the wind.
Just another year after that, in 2104, an enhanced version was brought to the current generation with releases on both Sony and Microsoft’s home console. Now, just four short years later, the long-awaited Nintendo Switch version has arrived, complete with all of the DLC from the versions mentioned above.
Hell is empty and all the devils are here
For the sake of this review, I don’t think it’s necessary to talk about the game’s story, but instead, focus on how well it runs on the Nintendo Switch and the features that this particular package brings to the table.
As you would expect from a game that released years ago, Diablo III looks a little rough around the edges. At the best of times, I could certainly see its previous generation roots. At the same time, the cut scenes are stunning and offer some polished cinematic moments. Diablo III has been flawlessly ported to Nintendo’s hybrid system. But for the sake of clarity, I will reinstate the fact; this is an excellent port.
The frame rate is stable throughout, consistently hitting 60fps and therefore offering a silky smooth gameplay experience. Everything pops off of the screen in both docked and handheld mode, but I found the grinding nature of this title made it the perfect portable companion. Another nice feature is the voice acting. Not only is it varied, but it is also constant, every single line of dialogue is voiced, which is incredible.
I found one notable difference from the PS4 and Xbox One versions. Loading times were considerably slower, which in reality is to be expected, considering the technical discrepancies between them and the Nintendo Switch.
The Devil is in the details
In the same way, in which Hyrule Warriors can be an absolute time sink of a game, Diablo III offers layer upon layer of button bashing brilliance.
Let’s be perfectly honest here, in some ways, and there isn’t much to Diablo III. The adventure is incredibly linear. During my extensive time with this title, I never found myself unsure of where to go next. And you know what, that’s fine.
Diablo III takes you on a wildly frantic, no bars held joy ride of intense action, offering the perfect blend of Action and RPG elements.
After creating a character, choosing from pre-defined classes and types, you embark on a gloriously satisfying dark fantasy epic that, due to the aforementioned linear nature never stalls or grows stale and even with the constant swarms of beasts to dispatch, the experience seldom become repetitive.
Along with the incredible array of weapons, armour upgrades and skills to improve, there are enough customisation options to keep even the most ardent of adventurer occupied long past initial story reaches its satisfactory conclusion.
Unique to the Nintendo Switch version is the integration of amiibo support. Included in your stash box from the very beginning is an amiibo portal. If you tap an amiibo to the NFC point with this item selected, various beasts will spawn that offer a chance to grind some exciting new gear. As always with amiibo support, it’s present without being obtrusive and so ideal for people who own Nintendo’s toys to life range, while not offering any game-breaking advantage.
Sympathy for the Devil
Diablo III Eternal Collection and Nintendo Switch is a match made in heaven.
Having released what seems like an age ago, I’m sure plenty of veterans will be double dipping. This is also the perfect entry point for newcomers, who have never managed to get involved with this successful franchise. After years of content updates, Quality of Life improvements and bug fixes; to name but just a few alterations this evergreen title has received since its inception. This is without question the best way to experience Diablo III and certainly the best value iteration from launch.
And if all that wasn’t enough, you can run around dressed as the OG himself, Ganondorf, King of Evil.
