Virtual reality has brought a whole host of sport-inspired gaming experiences. From pinball, table tennis, boxing, to racing, virtual reality has allowed people inside the home to experience these thrilling and fun sports. This is something I’ve admired about VR, and with experiences such as Topgolf, the real-life arcade-styled golf park, being temporarily shut down due to obvious pandemic reasons, Pro Putt delivers a fun, immersive take on the driving-range-focused gameplay with a variety of easy-to-play hard-to-master content.

Smart Controls

The first thing you’ll notice with Pro Putt right off the bat is its consistent and realistic controls. The game has you grip one Touch controller with both hands in order to simulate a golf club, and Pro Putt simulates hitting the ball through vibrations. Additionally, the base courses have a super handy guide when holding down the trigger that allows you to see the contour of the course as well as a putting guide when you’re close to a hole.

All in all, the game is super beginner friendly with minimal control inputs aside from moving and getting ready to hit the ball. I was able to hand off my headset to my father and he had zero troubles playing, and he even said the game was eerily close to crazy golf.

I can see why – Pro Putt, hence the name, focuses a lot more on putting than Topgolf’s driving focus. While in the game there are a couple holes that have you hit the ball quite far, the majority focuses on lining up the ball and hitting it with precise speed in order to hone your putting skills. I definitely agree with the decision to focus the game on the smaller side of golf, as it feels a lot more cozy when playing in the smaller area that the Quest accommodates more.

On Par for Content

Pro Putt by Topgolf comes equipped with three stages with more being added in the future. These courses offer a full golf course with lots of holes and once completed, you can complete their ‘Pro’ versions which offer less guidance on where to putt. It took me a little over an hour to an hour and a half to finish all the base courses, and they offered a fun experience which I have full intent on replaying again and again.

Aside from the basic holes, Pro Putt offers Multiplayer against friends, random opponents and offline bots. It’s basically the same as the campaign except you are tasked with finishing the course in a lower amount of putts as the opponent. It is fun and offers some more replay value on top of the base package.

Also available is the Putt Lounge, which mirrors the classic target-shooting gameplay of actual Topgolf whilst keeping it at a minimal putt-level size. This game-mode took up most of my social time with local mates, as it kept us wanting to one up each other’s score and prove our skills in the ultimate game of precision.

A Hole in One

Overall, Pro Putt by Topgolf nicely wraps a fun blend of arcade and simulation golf experiences into one, ditching the emphasis on driving and focusing on the much more VR friendly putting. I was thoroughly surprised by its realistic and fluid controls and physics, and on top, more content is on the way. I can see myself coming back to this game in the future time and time again for just one more par.
