I play games for a lot of reasons. Sometimes it’s for an immersive story driven solo experience. Another is for frenetic multiplayer carnage and socially mutual destruction. Yet another, is to be challenged and tested by difficulty or intricate puzzles. At other times, like after a long day down the word mine, my reason is a need for fun but mindless arcade action to fill a little time in the cycle of work, sleep and repeat.
Super Destronaut: Land Wars fits comfortably into this fun but mindless category of game, but that is by no means a criticism or complaint against it. This game knows exactly what it is, what it does and stands proudly by this identity. Super Destronaut: Land Wars has no delusions of grandeur, it delivers exactly what it promises with surprising value for money.
Shooting For A bargain
Available now for just £3.99, this game is unquestionably good value for money. Think what else you can buy or do with less than £5? Maybe buy a mid-range sandwich. This should be kept firmly in mind when looking at Super Destronaut: Land Wars.
The game is an arcade style FPS with a very simple voxel based aesthetic, the environments make me think of a tron-esque world designed for small but violent children. The game offers two main types of play, arcade and challenge, the former is split into five varied sub-types and the latter contains 30 different performance based challenges.
Gameplay is simple. Run around a series of neon coloured rooms using a small collection of weaponry to blast space-invader-like enemies to smithereens. Enemies fire back and dodge around a bit but basically line up for sweet destruction. Racking up a combo or a fast flurry of kills starts a short rampage mode which doubles your weapons and firing speed. Currency can be collected from defeated foes and used to purchase better weapons or upgrade.
Got You In My Sights
My biggest complaint with this game is the sound design. I found it became jarring and unpleasant in mere minutes; and had to be muted, much like a James Blunt gig. I know that it takes a great deal of time, money, and talent to produce great sound design. However, surely a better choice was available than the audible torture that features in Super Destronaut: Land Wars.
If I am honest, I doubt this game will find a long term home on my PS4. It could happily live on a PS Vita and would likely find a use on the odd train journey or waiting room. It is fairly priced, has some simple charm, and just enough action to pass some time. Just do yourself and everyone around you a favour, and roll down the volume.
