Get your body moving

There’s a trend in VR on the Oculus Quest and other systems for that matter that look to get people standing up and moving around. From the likes of Beat Saber, The Climb, Pistol Whip, and others, VR Fitness is becoming a thing on the Quest and I love it. OhShape is no different in terms of full-body movement and workout that you would get from games like Beat Saber or BoxVR, in that game requires specific movement during the two to five minute long songs.

OhShape has a bright interface, contrasting that of Beat Saber’s more dark UI and plays like a virtual version of the Japanese game show which later had an American Adaptation through The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The basic premise is that a solid wall is moving towards you with various cut-outs of contorted body positions from legs, arms, leaning and squat positions. The object of the game is to line yourself up with the hole in the wall as it moves closer towards you. Along with the various body positions you may also need to dodge yellow walls, similar to the walls in Beat Saber, hit coins placed throughout the track, and knock down red walls with one or both of your fists.

The cut-outs, walls, and coins race towards you at a pace that matches the various music tracks just like Beat Saber and BoxVR, the only main difference is that the positioning of your arms, hands, and whether or not you are leaning is an all-encompassing work out.

Basic tracks

The game comes with preloaded tracks, slightly less than 20, with three difficulty levels each. Basically, the standard VR rhythm game staples we have grown to know and expect. Along with the tracks and difficulty, there are leaderboards where you can see how well you are doing when it comes to friends or strangers from around the world.

The team behind OhShape does hint at new tracks and maps coming regularly throughout the game’s life cycle, though the amount of tracks we can expect to see is unclear. You can download a map editor for OhShape from their website and make your own tracks. I did not have a chance to try out their tool as it’s currently accessible via Windows Only.

A part of my workout

One thing that I have started doing is using Oculus VR in my everyday movement exercise routine. You may think it’s silly to play games for exercise, but the added movement that VR games have alongside actual fun experiences is great. For me, OhShape has been slotted into my weekly routine of Beat Saber, The Climb, BoxVR, and Thrill of the Fight. If you’re looking for a game that makes dancing and fitting into a hole in the wall fun, look no further than OhShape.
