This first-person shooter is developed and published by CI Games. It follows a Seeker who is an assassin for hire whose goal is to take down various members of a Siberian crime organisation. You have a selection of different weapons and gadgets at your disposal to help you achieve your goal, but if you haven’t already guessed from the title of the game your characters main weapon of choice is a sniper rifle. The sniper rifle proves to be versatile and, in my opinion, the only weapon you’ll need as you make your way through the Siberian landscape.
Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts both looks and sounds excellent, from its sizeable sweeping mountain vistas to its densely populated enemy camps across a variety of different landscapes ranging from snowy mountain peaks to lush green forest areas. My only criticism is that some of the character animations, especially when climbing, are very unrealistic and clunky.
The sound design is also fantastic! The satisfying bang when I squeezed the trigger on my 50 calibre Sniper rifle coupled with the slow-motion kill cam that lets you see and hear the bullet ripping through an enemy made for some very fun and rewarding long-distance kills. At the beginning of every mission you can pick your loadout and use the credits you gain from completing missions and challenges to purchase new weapons and gadgets, each weapon has a slightly different sound and feels to it, so it doesn’t just feel like a change of skin.
Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts consists of 5 mini sandbox-style levels that are littered with collectables and other side missions. One of the main tools you’ll be using is your mask which gives you access to different features such as binoculars to scout out different areas. It also includes a distance indicator to let you know how far away your targets and different objectives are.
It took me around 10 hours to complete the main missions and some of the side content on the medium difficulty setting, and I can honestly say that after learning how the bullet physics worked in the first hour or so I enjoyed my time with the game. One of the best parts of this game was scouting the different terrain and level layouts trying to plan your approach without being detected quietly and the sense of achievement I felt when I finally managed to pull it all off was fantastic.
While the game felt difficult, it didn’t seem unfair, each time I died and was returned to the beginning of the area so I could re-plan my attack with more knowledge of enemy patrol routes and locations. I played the whole game in stealth moving from area to area quietly picking enemies off one by one, but with all the weapons and gadgets available to you most people will manage to find a way to fit their preferred playstyle. Once the credits had rolled, I had no sudden urge to go back and play through it again although there were still plenty of collectables to be found and other side missions available.
Conclusion
My time with Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts was enjoyable. Still, I feel as though the realistic bullet physics and slow-paced gameplay may only appeal to previous fans of the franchise and sniper enthusiasts. Nonetheless, I would quite happily recommend this to anyone that enjoys first-person stealth games or wants to play a first-person shooter that’s different from the usual run and gun style of the popular AAA titles in the genre.
